Further Information
The title is taken from the conclusion of Alan Garner's book The Owl Service - which was a particular favourite growing up. "She wants to be flowers, but you make her owls. You must not complain, then, if she goes hunting." (Alan Garner). The quote is about breaking patterns of behaviour.
The birds that feature in this image are part of a collection of inherited keepsakes from the artist's grandparents. Both sets of Grandparents travelled widely through work and leisure between the 1920s and 1990s and collected souvenirs from places like China, Africa, and Japan that the child Clementine was fascinated by when she visited their homes. They were all left to Clementine and now create worlds and tableaus in Clementine's studio and home that remind her of their previous owners and the worlds she imagined them part of as a child. Part of a series loosely titled 'Objects and Memories', these keepsakes form part of Clementine's exploration of her fascination with Japan and the far East and her family connections to that land.
