JAPONISME

These prints were some of the first etchings I ever created. Then, as now, I worked directly onto the plate (mostly zinc), very rarely doing more than a sketch to keep the marks made in the drawing fresh. Each plate is drawn by hand and can take weeks to complete


All the women depicted are myself, this series was an exploration of self using inspiration from Ukiyo-e (Floating World) Prints that were popular in Japan in the 18th Century and that inspired many Western artists such as Picasso and Monet.
